KOMPA Collection

Fendi Casa further pursues the collaboration with Peter Mabeo, started by Fendi at Design Miami/ 2021. The bond with the furniture and accessories brand and associated design studio from Botswana, Africa, was born from the will to collaborate with a wide range of internationally renowned designers, while exploring local craft and pushing traditional techniques and materials into new directions.

Moving between one craftsperson and another, both physical and mental distances were covered. What might appear to be compromises or disagreements in the process helped to shape the result, creating a tangible outcome through objects that inherently and so beautifully reflect this process.

Foro Chair

Designed by Peter Mabeo

The Foro Chair stuns for its essential uniqueness: a concept of pure shape that Mabeo Studio expresses through a conscientious use of natural materials. Presented both in clay and Panga Panga wood, it's crafted using different traditional techniques from Botswana. This seat creates an emotional, subtle bond that is truly able to communicate the passion and expertise of its creators.

Efo Stool

Designed by Peter Mabeo

A fusion of two distinct materials – clay and Panga Panga wood – this stool by Mabeo Studio is intensely symbolic in nature. Balancing material, technique and craft process, Efo Stool riffs on the Fendi double F motif, transforming it into a unique object that combines modern design and traditional craft. The modular wood and clay sculptures fit intimately into one another while remaining distinctly independent.

Chichira Cabinet

Chichira Cabinet is a basket-woven cabinet with drawers defined by a modular, totally unique design. Made from palm leaves and Panga Panga wood, the piece expresses the responsible and ethical approach which Mabeo Studio always champions. The harmonious geometries of the different elements reflect the craft skills of the African artisans that collaborated on the project, with particular focus on cultural identity and interpersonal relationships.

Shiya Seat

This seating system is the handcrafted version of industrial hot moulding methods. Crafted from Panga Panga wood, the Shiya is characterised by a harmonious silhouette and curved lines – a symbolic dialogue between modern design and the rich aesthetic heritage of Africa. Through this piece, Mabeo Studio builds on their research into materials and local craft specialisations, bringing to life an object with a strong visual impact, unexpectedly iconic and uniquely original.

Loma Stools

Designed by Peter Mabeo

The Loma stool is a multifunctional work. Thanks to their organic shape, the elements can be used as either storage containers, stools, or joined together as a side table. The project sparks from the idea that an object is more than simply its function, projecting traditional African techniques and materials into new dimensions. Crafted from local wood, the inside surface is painted by artists from the desert region of Botswana, reflecting the multifaceted, collaborative nature of the collection.

Maduo Chair

Inspired by the O’ Lock jewellery line designed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi, the Maduo chair is an evocative piece created by Mabeo Studio that strikes the balance between modern design and artisanal mastery. The iconic motif stands out through the geometry of the chair and the craft skills required to create it, while the choice of Panga Panga wood highlights the craftsmen's direct relationship with their local environment.

The aim of Mabeo is to make the work of African artisans available to the world in a considered way, to reflect certain qualities – an essential simplicity of form, an idea of purity, the conscientious use and handling of natural materials, the dedication of the craftsmen and women, and the sensitivity of the collaborating designer with a reverence to the rich aesthetic heritage of Africa.

KOMPA Collection

Kompa, the title of the collection, originating from Mabeo’s most senior (in age) craftsperson, means something that is complete, implying an interest in holistic approaches when considering a project. Whilst some products in the collection were the sole responsibility of individual artisans, others were conceived in a way that required different craftspeople and techniques to collaborate to realize the structure and functionality of a piece.
