A native of Botswana, Peter Mabeo founded the Mabeo brand in 2006 with the idea of creating a synergy between local artisans and international designers. For the author and publisher, design acts as a translator for seemingly distant cultures to create new domestic objects. Mabeo’s vision has been rewarded with appearances at major events and with accolades, and his creations furnish luxury hotels, as well as residential, cultural and commercial projects around the world. In 2021, Fendi approached him to design furniture, exhibition spaces and communication material for the Design Miami fair, and an ongoing exchange of ideas has successfully flourished.
Moving between one craftsperson and another, both physical and mental distances were covered. What might appear to be compromises or disagreements in the process helped to shape the result, creating a tangible outcome through objects that inherently and so beautifully reflect this process.
